Lost Gardens

The Global Garden

The ravages of the Ice Age left Britain as one of the most botanically impoverished parts of the world. Most of our flowers are immigrants.

Plants from the Mediterranean area arrived with the Roman occupation. New species were brought home from Asia and the Middle East by merchants and crusaders from the 12th century onwards. After Columbus's voyage of discovery in 1492, the Americas provided many of our most familiar vegetables and flowers.
